VEGA’s private market development programs assist local entrepreneurs and businesses (from micro enterprises to heavy industry) strengthen their private sector linkages and achieve long-term economic growth. Volunteers also help government officials and regulators address underlying problems that inhibit economic growth, while at the same time assist to implement public policies that encourage development. Specific technical expertise may include identifying business linkages to foster trade opportunities, offering training on market identification or new product development as well as assisting business associations to improve their ability to provide services on a sustainable basis. Illustrative examples include: Enhancing international competitiveness through quality assurance and certification programs; Supporting legal and regulatory reform through training and support of advocacy organizations; Helping organizations and industry clusters identify new markets; Creating niche market opportunities for small- and medium-sized enterprises or clusters; Identifying and linking businesses across both borders and oceans to foster trade opportunities; Supporting US free trade agreements by helping developing country organizations become export-ready; Assisting governments in privatizing state-owned industries; Offering technical assistance and training on market identification, new product development, and productivity improvement to enhance competitiveness; Assisting organizations to obtain financing to achieve productivity improvements; Assisting industry clusters to identify and address issues that impede and constrain a business' ability to operate in a transparent, competitive and legal manner; and Assisting business support organizations and business associations to improve their ability to provide services on a sustainable basis.
