VEGA's Business Trade Development (BTD) program focuses on building effective Business Support Organizations (BSOs) that can, on a market-driven basis, provide a combination of general and industry-specific technical/managerial services to support the long-term growth of small and medium-sized enterprises within Bulgaria. VEGA helps the BSOs acquire the expertise required to meet the service needs of the SME clients though volunteer experts, local consultants, and long-term MBA advisors. VEGA's BTD program offers technical assistance to help BSOs identify the needs of client firms and to develop an appropriate mix of fee-based services to respond to market demand.

In addition, VEGA-BTD strives to promote dynamic and efficient public-private policy dialogue through targeted support to the Government of Bulgaria SME policy agencies on SME assistance and promotion activities, investment promotion and development, economic policy reform initiatives, and improved competitiveness, particularly through assistance to industry-specific clusters active in the local economy.

This assistance is carried out by VEGA’s implementing partners through: Volunteer-based technical assistance projects: Volunteer experts serve short-term in-country assignment, assisting BSOs in improvement of internal management and operational capacity and development of new products or services to enhance competitiveness of BSOs and SMEs. Volunteers may also provide remote assistance, where deemed appropriate. Local consultants: Local consultants are utilized for short-term assignments in response to BSO and SME technical assistance needs. MBA-Enterprise Corps (MBAEC) advisors: MBAEC members are placed with local BSOs for 12-month assignments to provide full-time advisory services to a host BSO in meeting the needs of its clients. Sector awareness events: Workshops, seminars and conferences will be organized for larger audiences of BSOs and SMEs on sector-specific topical issues. Small grants
